Blog Post 2: Portland!

Our charter issue of By Hand focuses on the makers' community in Portland because it is one of the most vibrant communities in the country when it comes to fiber and fabric.  Long known as the capitol of "DIY", the opportunities for makers to learn something new is almost endless - from bootmaking to cheesemaking to furniture making, if you want to learn how to do it, you can find someone in Portland who is ready, willing and able to teach you!  Portland is also home to some of the biggest names in the yarn industry, including Woolfolk, Shibui Knits, and new resident Brooklyn Tweed.

Issue #1 of By Hand includes a photo diary of Portland, making you feel as if you've had a chance to walk around the city and explore.  Food trucks, Forest Park, Nike's new bike town initiative, and street art are just some of the featured photos.  And By Hand includes an article about day tripping to Timberline - an Oregon icon and a unique opportunity to enjoy the work of Depression-era artisans who created one-of-a-kind art in wood, metal, and fiber.
